  • Application Description:

Play SCRABBLE®, the world's most popular word game on your Palm OS device! The Handmark SCRABBLE® Game for the Palm OS is designed to play just like the classic board game. It utilizes a drag-and-drop tile placement interface, a built-in Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary, automatically scores every game and even saves partially completed games to be continued at any time!

Choose to play in either Friendly or Tournament mode. Friendly mode is like a casual family game where you can choose to accept or reject words not outside the standard rules. Friendly mode also allows the "Suggest Move" option displaying suggestions for your next move. Choose the Tournament mode and you are playing by the classic SCRABBLE rules. Includes challenges that automatically check the built-in Official Scrabble Player's Dictionary!

Practice your SCRABBLE skills when you play against the automated computer opponent. Choose the skill level of your opponent: Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, or Expert. Play against one, two or three opponents using one device and the Handmark SCRABBLE game will hide your tile rack from your opponents. Play against opponents using multiple devices with IR beaming. Study your tile rack while your opponents take their turn!

The Palm OS version of SCRABBLE is produced by Handmark under a license agreement with Infogrames, Inc., which publishes the electronic and interactive versions of Hasbro properties.

Lots of fun! I look forward to having to wait (e.g., in the doctor or dentist's office, or for a flight at the airport) so I can play this game, either against the Palm or with my companion.

One bug I found: When playing against the Palm, I hit a case during the end game when neither I nor the Palm had any moves. I passed. The Palm passed. It was clear that the game had to end, but I could find no way to tell the game that it was over, and to give me credit for winning (I had more points).

The dictionary is great, but it is a bit tedious to have to clear the previous word just to lookup a new one. This is especially true when I use the dictionary while playing on a real board.

Despite the minor flaws, I still find it a lot of fun.

This game is lots of fun and I play it at least once a day (sometimes 2 or 3 times). I am an avid scrabble player and I usually beat the game on expert level (95% of the time). I wish the expert level used better strategy (it obviously "knows" more words than I do).

A major flaw is that the dictionary needs to recognize words longer than 8 letters. Legitiimate plurals of words are not recognized if they are too long. The way around this is to play "friendly." That way you can tell it to accept words which are obviously ok.

In summary this is a good game to help keep up your skills and have fun. Don't be fooled into thinking you're a great player just because you can beat it!!!

I'll give it three starts for good presentation, but there is something seriously flawed in the AI. I have played it enough to be convinced that it is simply not doing a thorough search for playable words. It often makes ridiculously low-scoring plays, sometimes even just a single vowel for less than 5 points. It seldom discards letters and then always reports that it has discarded all seven.

I can only recommend this implementation for beginning players. I would consider myself of intermediate skill, and I can beat expert level nine times out of ten.

I play several games of Scrabble each day and have done so since the program was released. I would agree with a previous reviewer's comment that the Expert Level could be harder. The predecessor, Niggle, from which Handmark Scrabble was born was brutal on Expert level.

I have noted two bugs that have never been corrected. The first is quite irritating. If you add an 's' to an eight-letter word, Scrabble will reject the word in Tournament mode even if it is a proper plural of the word. Handmark said this was some type of limitation that they may fix in the future. For example - SUPPLANT is fine but SUPPLANTS is rejected because it exceeds eight letters even though it is an acceptable word. This really kills a comeback. Been waiting over a year for this fix.

The second is a simple bug in the display of a score in excess of 100 points. Should you score a word of 108 points, the score will display as 10. Not enough room for the third digit.

Great game - easy to use. I feel that it is excellent value for money. Good colour scheme. In built dictionary makes it a joy to play. I've only played against "the Palm" but have beaten it several times. The option to trade tiles of your choice is also very useful. I'd be happy to recommend this game.
