    Application Description:

VFS provides a standard way for PalmOS applications to access an expansion card. VFS is found on most devices running PalmOS 4.x. It can also be found on Sony Clie's running PalmOS 3.5, HandEra (formerly TRG) devices, and Handspring Visors using FlashAdapter compatible Springboard modules. In addition to the variations on VFS implementations, the wide variety of expansion card brands and formats available adds an additional factor that can influence the performance of operations that use those cards. Last but not least, utilities that improve the performance of the handheld (such as overclocking applications) can affect VFS performance as well.

With all these variations, it's clear that a standard tool is necessary to measure VFS performance so that users can get an idea of what kind of performance can be expected from different system configurations. That's where VFSMark comes in.

VFSMark measures the following types of expansion card operations:

    • creating files
    • deleting files
    • writing to a file
    • reading from a file
    • moving to specific locations in a file
    • exporting databases to the expansion card
    • importing databases from an expansion card
    • accessing records in a database on the expansion card
    • accessing resources in a database on the expansion card

VFSMark shows the results of those tests relative the performance of a baseline system. The baseline chosen for VFSMark is a Palm m500 with a Palm 16MB SD card running without any overclocking or system performance enhancements.

VFSMark is Free software and full source code is included.

Good useful application that does what it says. Docked 1 star because the average is not weighted in any way - should be two options for weighting (in addition to the straight average): one for users who do primarily reading from cards, vs. one for users who do primarily writing to cards.

Important caveat: At least on my T3 (with T3 Update installed), there is still a bug (I believe) in the VFS drivers on the machine that cause wildly variant write performance. Try the following: run VFSMark on a newly formatted card, then run again and watch write numbers plummet. Also works on relatively empty cards that are ejected and re-inserted - first test good, second test abysmal.

Not sure what this says about this card - looks like absymal write and create performance and sterling read performance along with other superlative numbers. Anybody have an idea what all that would mean?

TREO 600 results with Kingston 256 MB Elite Pro High Speed. Ran three times with same results.

    File Create: 123%
    File Delete: 75%
    File Write: 30%
    File Read: 182%
    File Seek: 393%
    DB Export: 69%
    DB Import: 433%
    Record Access: 358%
    Resource Access: 345%
    VFSMark: 222

I'm not sure if it's the T600 or what, but I wouldn't reccomend this card due to the pathetic file read/write performance. It was billed as a super fast card, well it ain't!

VFSMark: What a great utility that anyone can use to compare SD Cards, thank you!

VFSMark: 247 (not high probably due to Tungsten E)
